What is the police cadet progam?

The Spokane Police Cadet Program is a volunteer law enforcement apprenticeship for young adults aged 18-24. Cadets receive Police training in firearms, defensive tactics, crime scene investigation, and with specialty teams like SWAT and K9. They will also learn leadership, communication, and public speaking skills and develop life long social and professional networks. 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 18 – 24 years old
  • High school diploma/equivalent or graduating in the next 2 months
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Able to commit to 20 hours of service per month
  • Must successfully pass an oral board and background investigation
  • If enrolled in college or trade school – must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to monthly training, cadets will participate in the following duties and responsibilities under the supervision of a commissioned Police officer. 

Cadets 18 – 21 years old will attend the Washington State Law Enforcement Explorer Academy (WLEAA) at their earliest opportunity after joining the program. 

LEVEL 1 CADET

  • Assist Spokane Police Department with community outreach, community enrichment, and at community events such as Hoopfest, Bloomsday, Lilac Parade, and others. 

LEVEL 2 CADET

  • Assist patrol officers with cold report calls (burglaries, hit and run collisions, pick up found property etc.) 
  • Respond to non-emergency calls after receiving advanced training on non-emergency vehicle operation
  • Opportunities to train and be promoted to positions of leadership roles and responsibilities

Those interested in the Cadet Program have the opportunity to attend an informational training session. To schedule and attend a training session, email volunteer@spokanepolice.org.

After you’ve attended the informational training session, download the application, fill it out electronically and email it to volunteer@spokanepolice.org. 

Students who are in their senior year of high school may apply in April before their graduation date.
